Commissioners Say Hands Are Tied In Approving BOE Millage Hike

Carroll County -- Carroll County Board Of Commissioners met for a special called meeting yesterday afternoon to pass the new millage rate set by the county school board.  Commissioners sought the legal help of local attorney Tommy Greer to detail why the county commission has no discretion when it comes to setting the millage passed by the school board.  Greer says the law has been challenged like many other laws and he says this particular law is a rarity in that it is a very black and white issue with no flexibility under legal terms to get around the issue of commissioners being legally bound to pass school board millage increase blindly. In other words, commissioners have no choice but to pass the millage increase.

District 3 commissioner Ashley Hendrix commended Chairman Bill Chappell and the board for its fiscal prudence in balancing the Carroll County government budget without a millage increase.
