Challenging City's Sign Ordinance

A Villa Rica business is challenging the city’s ordinance against the use of so-called “human signs” to advertise. Drivers near South Carroll Road have no doubt witnessed lady-liberty dancing and spinning a sign that advertises Liberty Tax Service on Moore’s Ferry Road. The problem is, according to city councilman Verland Best: the city passed an ordinance against that type of advertising back in August of 2012 citing safety concerns for the advertiser and potentially distracted drivers.

Best told WSB-TV Wednesday that there have been four or five near-miss accidents because of people like this waving signs.

However--- the business owner reportedly instructed his sign wavers to continue, after saying he got approval from Villa Rica Mayor J. Collins. Best responded to that claim by saying the mayor doesn’t have a vote on the city council.

The councilman says the business could now face citations for ignoring the ordinance.
