Burglary Suspect and Deputy Struggle. Shot Fired

A Carroll County Sheriff's Office Deputy has been placed on temporary leave following a struggle with a burglary suspect that resulted in the suspect being shot.
Carroll County Sheriff's Office Chief Brad Robinson told WLBB Radio Thursday that deputies had responded to an alarm at around 2:20am from the Stateline Shoppette located between Bowdon, Georgia and Ranburne, Alabama.
"When deputies arrived, they discovered the back door of the building to be open... the door lock had been cut out. And they noticed power tools nearby... a battery operated saw," Robinson explained. "Deputies entered the store... and apparently surprised the individual inside the store. The male confronted the deputies and tried to take the weapon from a deputy. During a struggle, the suspect was struck in the arm by a bullet from the deputy's gun."
The suspect has been identified as 21-year old Thomas Dodson of Anniston, Alabama. Investigators say he did attend school in Ranburne at some point.
According to Robinson, after being shot in the arm the suspect continued to struggle with the deputy. The deputy was able to take control of the situation and handcuff the suspect. EMT's arrived on the scene to treat the wounded male.
"He has not been very cooperative with investigators so far," Robinson said. "We have a few unanswered questions at this point but we do know he has ties to nearby Ranburne, Alabama."
Dodson is currently in hospital in stable condition, with a single gun shot wound to his arm.
The Sheriff's Office notified the Georgia Bureau Of Investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
"It's a routine call to the GBI to investigate all officer involved shootings, but I'm confident that our officer did the right thing considering he was put in a bad situation," Robinson said. "Investigators also found a 9mm hand gun in the suspect's waistband... so this situation could have been worse for our deputy and I'm pleased that he was able to go home this morning."
Dodson faces numerous charges when he is released from hospital.
