Beware Of Post-Storm Scammers

As the March winds prevail and the April showers are in sight, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to beware of scam artist posing as repairman after a sudden storm.
Yesterday’s storm has already shown damage in our area and many inquiries have been made on how to report the damage, especially to vehicles.

Anyone who has had hail or storm damage to their vehicle does NOT need to call law enforcement for a report, even if you were driving when the hail damage occurred. Instead you should contact insurance carrier directly. The same applies to any roof or other damage to residences.

A local insurance representative provided some good neighborly advice concerning any potential claims. Any claims related to weather should be made immediately by contacting your local agent or claims representative to verify that you have the appropriate coverage. The severe storm has already been documented by most insurance companies and most are expecting claims.

As to home damage, remember when dealing with contractors that they are now required to be licensed through the Secretary of State’s Office, after having met a multitude of requirements that include being insured / bonded. If there are any doubts about approved repair personnel, most insurance claims departments can provide you with a list of approved contractors or you can verify them their status through the Secretary of State (https://secure.sos.state.ga.us/myverification/).
